It is an open question as to whether or not the chip designs are original or based on Intel.

Here is a listing of the top supercomputers, the US has fallen to #3 and, in June, Japan surpassed China to capture the #1 spot with the "K Computer" which looks like it would be right at home in a Godzilla movie.
This is a great field to consider going into if you like computers as the US is making new commitments to get back into the race and China is committed to beating them to make the first exaflop computer.
