Weekly thoughts...plus: Brandy's weekend observations for Falling Man...

Some thoughts for the week:
AP Literature:
The Reluctant Fundamentalist:
Mohsin Hamid's official site is a great site with a lot of links to valuable interviews with the author. Chad, check this out if you are checking out Moth Smoke (I will eventually get to it).

Here is a link to an essay by Mohsin Hamid concerning the writing of the novel and his own internal conflicts: NY vs. LaHore.

Falling Man:

Brandy mentioned that I should provide a link to Shelley's "Revolt of Islam" a poem in 12 cantos. Happy I listened, he barked out a few more ideas:

Here is a link to the official site of the house Carol Shoup visited in the novel a few weeks before 9/11.

Here is One Liberty Plaza also mentioned in the novel.

Here is a treatment of the Haiku in the book. Even in Kyoto---I long for Kyoto.

Here is a link to a Google search for Morandi's natura morta paintings.

If you are looking for a definition and example of Cognitive Dissonance, click here.

Eliot's Statement on the "Objective Correlative" (from Wikipedia):Eliot used the term exclusively to refer to his claimed artistic mechanism whereby emotion is evoked in the audience:
“The only way of expressing emotion in the form of art is by finding an "objective correlative"; in other words, a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the formula of that particular emotion; such that when the external facts, which must terminate in sensory experience, are given, the emotion is immediately evoked."

American Literature:

We will be working on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn this week. the Twain Quotes is a fun site you might enjoy: http://www.twainquotes.com/. The Twain House is also very interesting. Here are some pics from my visit:

Journalism

This week we are diving into news writing. I will start the week with some articles and puzzles as well as the introduce the inverted pyramid. We will also start brainstorming for issue #1 and look at our video equipment.
