OK, here are some quick thoughts jotted down in response to a question someone asked today that I didn't want to spend the period discussing:
For starters: Here's an official "definition" of art
Some things to consider:
1. Look for it to display a technique of some sort that is being practiced (painting, writing, playing an instrument, or composing something in some fashion).
2. See if it challenges you to think about something differently (See Martin Amis's War Against Cliche or think of Pound's demand: "Make it new.")
3. Consider that it was done consciously (...otherwise, obviously my cousin's kids are all as good as Pollock).
Given this, look these three things and ask yourself what qualifies as art (save #4 for last...but don't skip it and click on the link to more):
Door #1 Door #2 Door #3 Door#4
If you clicked on and watched "more" under Door #4, do you consider the very way the information is presented to be "art"?
